Console MMOs - the forgotten frontier

Before cross-play was common, console MMOs were their own unique ecosystems. PSO on Dreamcast, FFXI on PS2, Chromehounds on 360, MAG on PS3.\n\nThese games had to work with controllers, limited keyboards, and console-specific networks. The design constraints often led to creative solutions.\n\nWhich console MMO do you think was most underrated?

PSO on GameCube with the broadband adapter. The couch co-op split screen combined with online play was ahead of its time. Four friends on the couch plus four more online equals perfect chaos.

MAG is my answer. 256 players on PS3 with a hierarchical command system. Squad leaders gave orders, platoon leaders coordinated. It was the most organized FPS chaos ever on a console.

FFXI on PS2 with the hard drive adapter. Typing with a USB keyboard on a console in 2004 felt like the future. And the game was gorgeous for its time.

Chromehounds. The persistent war where squads fought for territory on a continent map. When your faction lost ground overnight you felt it. FromSoftware made something special before Dark Souls took over their identity.

Monster Hunter on PS2. Technically not an MMO but the online multiplayer lobbies with four-player hunts were a revelation. That series found its audience on PSP in Japan first.
