Server shutdown stories - the last day

Post by OracleOwl »

Every MMO shutdown has its own kind of grief. I was there for the last day of SWG, City of Heroes, and WildStar. Each one hit differently.\n\nSWG: Everyone gathered in Mos Eisley cantina. Entertainers played music until the lights went out.\nCoH: Atlas Park was so full of heroes the server could barely handle it.\nWildStar: Housing plots lit up with farewell messages.\n\nShare your shutdown stories.

SWG final night. My guild gathered at our city hall in Theed. We had been together for years. We told stories, shared memories. When the disconnect happened mid-sentence, it felt like losing a home.

City of Heroes, Atlas Park, November 30, 2012. Hundreds of heroes standing together. Someone was playing Taps over voice chat. I screenshot my character one last time. I still have that screenshot as my desktop background.

Tabula Rasa had the best shutdown event. They literally had the aliens win. The world was invaded and destroyed in real time. Richard Garriott character died on camera. It was theatrical and heartbreaking.

I was recording music during the WildStar shutdown. The Thayd plaza was packed. Everyone was using the dance emotes. I turned that recording into a tribute song.
